Where Woolf penned her dissidence, Andrea Mindel embroiders it.
Made in response to the international Virginia Woolf 2025 Conference ‘Woolf & Dissidence’ , Madame Defarge goes Bloomsbury features key phrases capturing Woolf’s reflections and uneasy juxtapositions on the nature of dissidence. It provides context for contemporary issues playing out on a tired world stage that troubled Woolf a century ago and still resonate today.
Between late June and September 2025 this slate frame is on display in the Sussex University Library as part of the exhibition “Pressing Matters: Printing with Virginia Woolf” co-curated” by Hope Wolf, Helen Tyson and the Centre for Modernist Studies.
For this piece, Mindel garnered quotes relating to “dissidence” in Woolf’s writings from Professor Anne Fernald, Professor Madelyn Detloff, Helen Tyson, Mark Hussey and others.
